Here are some key innovation initiatives announced Tuesday:

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh launched the India Innovation portal that will serve as an information repository for innovation in the country.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the government will set up an India Inclusive Innovation Fund which will start with an initial corpus of Rs.100 crore.

National Innovation Council (NIC) chief Sam Pitroda said the target was to set up a Rs.5,000 crore fund to help innovators translate ideas into businesses.

The prime minister said the government plans to connect 2.5 lakh panchayats with broadband.

Manmohan Singh announced the setting up of a global-first concept of a meta-university online network, which would, for example, enable a student of astrophysics at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, take up a course in literature at Jadavpur University.

The prime minister announced that the ministry of human resource development will launch Innovation Fellowships to reward talent at the school level.

The human resource development ministry also proposes to engage high school students in mapping local history, ecology and culture to make them aware of their immediate environment.

The prime minister said to increase competitiveness of the local small-scale industry, the NIC, with help from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, will set up industry innovation clusters for which the University of Delhi and MS University, Baroda have already tied up.

He said the 13th Finance Commission has given a Rs.1 crore grant to each district for setting up a District Innovation Fund.

Pitroda said to make innovation popular among the masses, the NIC would start reality shows on private TV channels and Doordarshan by January 2012.
